North East Summer Social - Hexham, 2016

The first North East Retro Caravan Club Social Rally was held in Hexham, Northumberland 20 miles west of Newcastle. The site is situated at a working race course with stunning panoramic Northumbrian countryside. The friendly campsite warden provided us with our own cosy corner overlooking the race track and possibly the best views on the site. As everyone arrived it was apparent how helpful our lovely group of caravaners are, as everyone pitched in to help set up awnings and level caravans. Even the furry guests were quick to make friends.

The smaller exclusive gathering allowed us to socialise together in the caravans during the evening, enjoying drinks and nibbles and swapping caravan stories and advice into the early hours. Over the weekend the group ventured out to nearby Kielder Reservoir and Forest park. It is hard to imagine there is a full village of houses underneath the man made reservoir as it was flooded to make way for this great expanse of water. This was quite an adventure for Panda the dog taking a dive from the rock face straight into the lake!

A visit was made to nearby Birdoswald Roman Fort and Hadrian’s Wall. This is a historical World heritage site and was a great day out for the Mellis boys. There they took pleasure in learning how to be a Roman legionnaire and burned off some energy walking along the almost 2000 year old fortification. We were very lucky with the weather over the weekend, we enjoyed glorious sunshine throughout the whole Rally, with only a small shower of 15 minutes just in time for us packing away the awning. It is not so ‘Grim up North’ as people may think.

I would like to thank everyone for making the effort to attend and support the RCC. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Christopher and Cameron for their continued support in organising this first North East event.
