Late Summer Social, 2016

We arrived at Wolds Way Caravan Park in the Vale of Pickering on Thursday evening to set up camp for the arrivals the next day. The site is set in a working farm, with the most stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. We were due to be met by Christopher and Cameron on the evening, but were met instead by a phone call and a request for help. They ran out of petrol half-way up the long hilly driveway to the campsite! Towing the car and caravan up the hill was too much for our battered family car, leaving a lingering burning clutch smell. Not to be beaten, it was a team effort to get car and caravan safely sited. Our club leaders certainly know how to make an entrance!

As the rally attendees started to trickle in it was clear that it was going to be a wonderful turnout. As you can see from the pictures, we had an amazing selection of vintage and retro caravans. Friday was particularly windy which stopped the use of sun canopies and awnings for some. The facilities included a large common room which we could utilise and stay cosy. On Friday night we held a caravan related pub quiz, with a picture round, general knowledge and caravan trivia. One team had to be disqualified due to ‘Googling’ allowing Dave and Lynn to be crowned winners. They were delighted with their prize - a much sought after club Pennant. Team “Thickos” lived up to their name and claimed the booby prize. Unfortunately what looked like a cheap bottle of plonk turned out to be a lovely white toilet brush!

The next day saw a big improvement in the weather which allowed some members to explore the surrounding countryside with some going to the Malton Game & Seafood Fest, enjoying many culinary delights. Whilst the local boot sale at Pickering threw up a bargain drying rack for Martin & Lorraine and vintage accessories for Julie Stokes. Several members went along to the craft afternoon, organised by Victoria and Christine, where they were taught how to crochet and to patchwork whilst enjoying cakes. It was clear we have a lot budding craft talent within our club. We are loving the updates and pictures of our members craft projects on our Facebook page, well done!

Saturday night saw the group gather to enjoy a few rounds of retro bingo, where adults and children won a selection of retro themed games and prizes. A visiting takeaway van served our members delicious fish and chips and was certainly worth queuing for.

Sunday was a lovely sunny relaxing day involving the children and furry friends running and playing about
the campsite and the obligatory group photo session. Many enjoyed a lazy relaxing Sunday into dusk as the site owners allowed us to leave at our own leisurely pace. However, there was some final weekend excitement when the AA came to the rescue of the Walsh family. The kids loved watching a car and caravan being towed away by a big truck.

A special thank you goes out to the site owner Derek and the warden, Del for their marvellous hospitality. We look forward to a return visit in the spring of 2017.
